The Colorado Hoopsters provide student-athletes the opportunity to play competitive basketball. We teach the importance of fundamentals, competition, perseverance, and goal setting. It's not about winning and losing. It's about preparing yourself for the competition and maximizing your efforts. We give kids hope.

College Readiness

The Colorado Hoopsters provides student-athletes with access to academic support, educational guidance and enrichment activities. Furthermore the Colorado Hoopsters help student-athletes with college and NCAA  preparation and readiness for college graduation. We support all schools.

The Colorado Hoopsters participate in various community and volunteer events. Our student-athletes are leaders in their communities and schools. Furthermore every student-athlete attends monthly leadership and character education classes.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Colorado Hoopsters is to provide an educational, athletic and positive life altering experience through competitive, elite basketball.

 

Opportunity

The Colorado Hoopsters provide opportunities for student-athletes to grow as individuals.

Basketball provides an excellent platform to teach key life skills such as leadership, discipline, promote teamwork, perseverance, healthy living and goal setting. 

Academics

The Colorado Hoopsters provide academic support, educational guidance, NCAA guidance and college readiness preparation to student-athletes. 

Community Leadership

The Colorado Hoopsters host annual community events such as a Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner Give Away, Build-A-Bike Give-Away, Christmas Toy Drive and Clothes Drive to help people and communities in need. 

Team Costs

The reality is that it remains financially out of reach for many qualified and deserving youth to participate in competitive sports. Therefore, the Hoopsters, are committed to providing opportunities for young athletes to develop and play competitive sports while eliminating the financial barriers.

Gabe Trujillo

Executive Director/ Coach

Coach Gabe Trujillo, an original Harvey Park Hoopster, has been coaching and teaching for more than 20 years. Coach Gabe played college and professional basketball. Coach Gabe has been a teacher, high school coach (Colorado Academy, Lincoln, Denver North and Denver West High Schools), Athletic Director (Lincoln and Montbello High School) and Principal (Sheridan High School and Manny Martinez Middle School). Gabe was also the CEO/ President of Colorado UpLift. Coach Gabe is married to his wife Ellena and has 2 kids Alexei and Alicia who are Hoopsters!

Billy Salaz

Coach

Coach Billy Salaz has been coaching for 20+ years. Coach Billy most recently served as Head Coach at Adams City High School. Coach Billy has coached high school and club teams across the metro area. Coach Billy is father to 3 beautiful daughters Christina, Amber and Jordan and 5 grandchildren to Nevaya, Derrick, Nikolas, Nathaniel and Ry. He is a loving father and husband to his wife Crystal. When Coach Billy is not on the court you can catch him in his Mach 1 Mustang.

Khyrs Contreraz

Coach

Coach Khrys Contreraz has been around the game of basketball since he was a small child. Khrys played high school at Adams City High School. Coach Khrys has served as the Assistant Coach at The Academy Both Sides’. Coach Khrys is currently the Head Coach at Denver North High School. 

Coach Khrys spends time with his wife Ashley.

Gabe Trujillo

Executive Director/ Coach

Coach Gabe Trujillo is an original Harvey Park Hoopster. Coach Gabe is  a current professional educator at Westminster Public Schools. Coach Gabe has served as a teacher, coach and administrator in public education for the past 25+ years. Coach Gabe has also served as CEO and President of several local non-profits including the Executive Director of the Colorado Hoopsters. Coach Gabe played college basketball at Western State and Metro State University in Colorado. Coach Gabe played professionally in Mexico and several semi-professional teams in the US and abroad. 

Coach Gabe is married to Ellena and is the proud father of Alexei and Alicia (both Hoopsters). Coach Gabe comes from a big "Tribe" that he loves dearly. 

"The Colorado Hoopsters are a labor of love that motivate me to be the best coach and leader I can be. I love being in the gym working with kids to be better basketball players and leaders. There is no other place I would rather be."

Steve Fendry

Board Member/ Coach

Coach Steve Fendry has been coaching hoops for 20+ years. Coach Steve was the Executive Director for more than 15 years and is a current Hoopster coach and board member. Coach Steve is the current Head Girls' Coach at Westminster High School. 

Coach Steve was a high school All-American, college All-American and professional basketball player. Coach Fendry is a Hall of Fame Athlete at Western State University.  He started coaching the Hoopsters in 2001. Coach Fendry won 3 state high school championships as a High School Head Coach at Mullen High School in Denver, Colorado. Coach Fendry has served as a special education teacher, coach and administrator in public education for 20+ years.

Steve is a high intensity coach that demands excellence every time he steps on the court.

Steve is married to Noreen and the proud father to son Steve and daughter Lauren.

Ellena Trujillo

Social Media/ Photography

Ellena is the current photographer and social media specialist. Ellena has been involved in athletics administration. 

Ellena is an accomplished musician who is classically trained. Therefore Ellena understands the hard work and discipline that is required to be successful at a goal.

Ellena is married to Coach Gabe and has 2 daughters (Hoopsters Alexei and Alicia). Ellena loves her dog Abbi and is the queen of the Trujillo household.

Ellena has been involved administratively in competitive volleyball and basketball.

Be careful when around Ellena she will take photos of you! Ellena doesn't miss a moment to capture a picture or video. She lives life through basketball and the lens of the Colorado Hoopsters.

Shawn Dirden

Coach

Coach Shawn Dirden is the current middle school coach. Coach Shawn is a professional educator. Coach Shawn has been a high school and college coach. Coach Shawn was the Head Boys' Basketball Coach at George Washington High School where he led the Patriots to state qualifiers. Coach Shawn then was the Assistant Coach at Indian Hills Community College, North and South Dakota University and Montana State University. Coach Shawn was the Head Men's Coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Coach Men's Coach played Holland, Sweden, China Lebanon and Venezuela as well in the NBA. 

Coach Shawn loves being part of the game and sharing his wisdom to help make his players better. Coach Shawn is a leader in the community and loves kids.

Coach Shawn is married to his beautiful wife Sierra and is father to son Damian and daughter Taylor (Hoopster).

Billy Salaz

Coach

Coach Billy Salaz was born and raised in Colorado. He has been coaching High basketball over 30+ years and is currently the Assistant coach for Denver North High School Girls' team. He also has coached club basketball for 30+ years as well, has been part of the Colorado Hoopsters since 2019. His passion has always been coaching and mentoring players and coaches. "I firmly believe in process-oriented coaching, by prioritize player development over win-loss records. I do this by instilling a sense of self-belief, this creates a sense of belonging and motivates players to give their best effort." Coach Billy has been Coach of the Year in (2008 & 2019). He coached in the CHSCA All-State games in 2016. 

Billy has been married to his wife Crystal for 31 years, has 3 daughters (Kristina, Amber and Jordan) and 5 Grandchildren (Nevaya, Derrick Jr, Nikolas, Nathaniel, and Rylee). He also trains and competes in Jiu-Jitsu, his hobby is car shows and restoring classic cars.

Oscar Cedillo

Board Member/ Coach

Coach Oscar Cedillo is the current Assistant Coach at Denver South High School. He has been coaching basketball and football for 10+ years and is currently the head coach of the Bear Creek 4th grade girls team as well as the Colorado Hoopsters. His passion has always been coaching and mentoring young kids at all levels and is confident that he is able to relate to the young athletes and create a sense of enthusiasm and love for the game. Oscar's goals for his players are to become the best they can be, to earn a sense of discipline and pride in their craft; on and off of the court.  

Oscar has been married to his beautiful wife Angelique. Coach O has a daughter Malena (Hoopster) and son Cruz who are his heart.  He loves spending time with his family and loves them very much.

Coach Oscar is the current middle school director and board member.

Noah Vigil

Board Member/ Coach

Coach Vigil was born and raised in the Denver metro area, and played basketball while attending Jefferson High School in Edgewater, Colorado. He's been coaching club basketball since 2016 and has been around our beloved game his entire life. Coach Vigil has a passion for player development and loves to inspire, motivate and challenge young athletes to be transformational leaders on and away from the hardwood. 

Coach Vigil is married to his beautiful wife Jacqueline Vigil and has 3 kids Gianna, Jayda (current Hoopster) and Noah Jr. Coach Noah's life revolves around God, family and basketball.

Tedd Sabus

Coach

Coach Tedd Sabus has been coaching youth basketball for the past 20 years in Colorado. Coach Tedd has coached in the Arvada West and Ralston Valley feeder districts in soccer, baseball and basketball.

Coach Tedd was an All-State and All-Conference high school player at Pomona High School. Then Coach Tedd went on to play college basketball at University of Northern Colorado where he was an All-Conference player. Tedd loves the life lessons that sports teach and how he can contribute to strengthening kids for their future.  

Coach Tedd is married to the beautiful Donia and together they have 3 beautiful daughters Saya, Sophia and Santana. All 3 of the Sabus girls are Hoopsters.

Khrys Contreraz

Coach Khrys is the current Head Coach at Denver North High School. Coach Khrys has led Denver North to the highest wins in his 1st season as Head Coach. Coach Khrys has served as Assistant Coach at The Pinnacle where he was instrumental in developing state qualifying teams and developing college bound players. 

Coach Khrys has a passion for working and developing basketball players. Coach Khrys is a leader that leads with his heart. Coach Khrys is a student of the game and is constantly challenging himself to be a better coach for his players. Coach Khrys leads with integrity and is focused on positive outcomes for his players. 

Coach Khrys is focused on his family. Coach Khrys is married to Ashley and is the god father to Michael. Both of whom are his heart.

Cesar Cedillo

Coach

Coach Cesar Cedillo is a proud graduate of Denver West high school. Coach Cesar is a professional educator with the Denver Public Schools. He has been coaching basketball, football and baseball  for 20+ years. Coach Cesar has coached boys’ and girls’ middle school and high school basketball teams mostly in the Denver Public Schools. Currently, he serves as head coach for the 7/8 girls' basketball team at Notre Dame Catholic School.

Coach Cesar believes coaches need to provide and create a positive learning environment where players feel supported and have a joy of playing ball. He wants his players to have confidence in themselves and be great teammates.

Coach Cesar was an All-City and All-State basketball player at Denver West High School. 

He is father to Roman (15 years old) and Hoopster Anaya (13 years old). He is married to his wonderful wife Rosella.

Gary Rhoades

Founder/ Consultant

Gary Rhoades is the Founder of the Harvey Park Hoopsters and the Colorado Hoopsters. Gary started coaching youth at several Denver Parks and Recreation Centers including Harvey Park Recreation Center. Gary gathered a group of kids and conducted skill and drill sessions year round. During this time Gary assembled teams to play across the city and state. The original team name was the Harvey Park Hoopsters. Eventually the Colorado Hoopsters formed and started competing on a national level. Gary was a high school and college All-American at Denver West High School and Colorado State University. Gary is the father of Meshach Rhoades, former Colorado Hoopster and Regis University star, and husband to Coach Glenda Rhoades.

Evan Eschmeyer

Coach

Coach Evan Eschmeyer is the current Head Boys' Basketball Coach at Peak-to-Peak Charter High School. Coach Evan is a former high school All-American, college All-American and ex-NBA player.

Coach Evan attended the Northwestern University where he went on to achieve All-American status.

Coach Evan is a dedicated, hard working, grind it out coach. Coach  

Coach Evan is married to the beautiful and Northwestern University ex- basketball standout Kristina (formerly Divjak). Kristina was an All-American in high school and college as well. 

Together the Eschmeyers have 3 children and father to Alex, Elijah and Mallie.
